Star Academy’s homeroom teachers are certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. We adhere rigorously to the Ontario Curriculum as established by the Ministry of Education. Yet we implement this curriculum in a way that greatly enhances child development.

Over the past decade, standardized test scores have become the motivating factor for much academic programming. This narrow focus severely limits long term growth. In our experience, sustained academic achievement begins by inspiring in a students a genuine love of learning. Once established, high test scores are a given.

At Star Academy we set the highest expectations for our students. Teachers instill a strong work ethic, along with pride in achievement. Our 10:1 student-teacher ratio is central to this mission. Each child has unique strengths and challenges. We take the time to ensure that all of them get the attention they need.

Our approach is interdisciplinary. Rather than schedule discrete subjects (math, reading, science, and so on) teachers select topics that integrate these subjects. A recent example is “honey bees.” Students studied the biology of bees and structure of colonies. They discovered how these characteristics are woven into literature. Research revealed bees to be integral to our food system. Students analyzed numeric data to understand the impact humans have had on this fragile ecosystem.

Engaging in curriculum in a deep and purposeful manner ignites students’ passion and creates ownership over the learning process. By posing questions and solving problems, they learn to grasp the complexities of our world. At key moments throughout the year students share their findings with the larger school community. In essence, they become teachers, a true sign that a curriculum has been mastered.
