OPUS Programmes

We firmly believe that we offer the best education possible to our student body at a 10-1 ratio. And this will never change. Research consistently supports our view that student-specific skill training delivered in a low class ratio will see higher student achievement. If a graph were drawn, the link between class size and achievement would be clear. Understanding this, we have developed a unique series of structured programmes that are integrated into our timetable. With a 5-1 ratio these programmes provide a new focus for students, as we all help them to achieve their full potential.

Conquering Reading Acquisition  (Academic upgrade) Grade 1 – 6

It is very important to keep in mind that difficulty in reading is not the result of a lack of motivation. Phonemic awareness is the root of all the teaching and therefore imperative that it be explicitly and directly taught. Star Academy uses a broad range of materials and base programmes, in developing an individual programme to ensure that all modalities are engaged in this process.

Demystifying the Writing Process (Academic upgrade) Grade 3- 8

This programme recognizes that writing is both a process and a product. Writing can be compared to an iceberg- two-thirds of it is hidden with only the one third recognized. Demystifying the Writing Process concentrates on the hidden majority – the underlying process that is hindering student progress. Using direct teaching, the students will learn the “how to” of writing. Moreover they will utilize technologies that will free them to focus on content rather than fine-motor form.

Learning Leadership (Sports/Social) Grade 2- 8

Quoting Richard Lavoie,”…it is a widely accepted fact that the primary need of the human being is to be liked and accepted by other human beings…” Learning leadership is a course that Star Academy has compiled that recognizes and understands the importance of a student’s mastery of basic social skills as a means to future successful relationships.

Psychology of Sport (Sports/Social) Grade 2 – 8

Working as a team, we begin by establishing baseline assessment in four general areas, namely fundamental movement skills (e.g. stability, manipulation), health-related physical fitness (e.g. cardiovascular endurance), skills-related physical fitness (e.g. coordination, speed) and social/emotional development (e.g. cooperation, attention, focus). With this baseline in mind, we establish specific areas on which to concentrate efforts.

At a 3:1 student:teacher ratio the Psychology of Sport is designed to benefit all participants, whatever their level.

Conquering Math – Fears and Facts (Academic upgrade) Grade 5-8

Star Academy recognizes that a math weakness can be anxiety-producing and even traumatic for some students. Thus, it is important that we provide guidance and are infinitely patient and emotionally supportive. The second step in treating math difficulties is to identify specific weaknesses (e.g. memory issues, sequencing problems). Once specific problem areas are identified, effective remedial strategies can be implemented and reinforced.

Outside the “Cube” (Gifted) Grade 7 – 8

Knowing that students in this programme can grasp mathematical concepts quickly, they will be challenged to discuss and explore mathematical problems to a deeper level. Using a stimulating and creative environment, Outside the Cube will provide a unique opportunity for students to perceive mathematics at a higher level of abstraction and complexity and encourage their ability to “think outside of the box”.

Scaling New Heights (Gifted) Grade 7 – 8

The programme recognizes that some learners, to reach their full potential, need to be engaged differently. The pace, breadth and depth of this programme will exceed both the Ontario Curriculum and the class standards. The students will be encouraged to use critical and analytical thinking skills, advanced research skills and will be provided many opportunities for creative production.

The OPUS programmes are optional and are tailored to meet the needs of the student within the skill development area of choice. Growth of the student is monitored closely and monthly meetings set to discuss both achievements and next steps. The OPUS range was introduced only in 2008 and the growth in participants has surpassed all of our expectations. All of those families involved can recognize and measure the benefits.

Parental choice is key, student progress is paramount.
