OPUS – Star Academy's School Gymnasium

OPUS Motion(offered before and after school)
Ideal for Grades 2 – 8

Take any group of 100 kids and there will be a percentage of them that will go to any lengths to avoid the school gymnasium. For those kids it has historically only served to confirm perceived failings that were all too quickly illustrated as soon as the class lined up to pick teams! They’re last pick… again… Heartbreaking for a Parent. For a child, it can embed attitudes and behaviours to Health & Fitness that last a lifetime.

With a low student:teacher ratio and working as a team, we begin by establishing baseline assessment in four general areas, namely fundamental movement skills (e.g. stability, manipulation), health-related physical fitness (e.g. cardiovascular endurance), skills-related physical fitness (e.g. coordination, speed) and social/emotional development (e.g. cooperation, attention, focus). With this baseline in mind, we establish specific areas on which to concentrate efforts.

Since the introduction of this optional programme (for Star students) we have seen results which have surpassed our expectations. In addition to self-awareness and body image, general fitness and core skills are being developed. The programme has had a tangible impact on students’ social and academic success.
